Sometimes during the hot summer months, you may see some condensation around your toilet tank. There can be a little bit of moisture around the bottom of the toilet on the floor. If you see quite a bit of moisture or water around the toilet, you most likely have a leak.

Most leaks are caused by problems with the valves or connections in the toilet. Here are some tips that can help you to find out where the leak is in the toilet.

Leaks are common in the fresh water feed. This flexible hose feeds water to the tank from the supply pipe. After time, the hose can get brittle and crack. This means that water will leak from the crack. The couplings which hold the hose to the toilet can also become a problem after a while. If the couplings don’t properly tighten, the seal can become broke which can also lead to leaks. Luckily, it is very easy and inexpensive to fix this problem by replacing the hose and the couplings.

The tank can also leak from time to time. Tanks usually leak from the bolt that holds the tank and bowl together, or from the gasket which is located between the tank and bowl. In order to fix leaks from the bolt, you may need to replace the washers and rubber that help seal the hole. The entire bolt may need to be replaced if it has rusted through. The good news is that the parts to fix the tank will only cost a few dollars and can be purchased at any hardware or big box store.

Sometimes, the leak is from between the tank and the toilet bowl. Most times this is due to problems with the gasket that fits around the horn of the toilet. You should be able to fix the problem by replacing the gasket.

If you notice nasty smelling water accumulating between the bottom of the toilet and the floor, then you will need a new seal. This seal is called a wax ring seal and is used to seal the pipes between the bottom of the toilet and the top of the waste pipe.

Replacing the wax ring can be a lengthy project. To do this properly, you must turn off the water and disconnect the toilet. Then, you should take the toilet apart. You will need to carefully scrape the old wax ring off the bottom of the toilet, replace it with a new wax ring and then properly seat the toilet on the ring. After this is done, settle the toilet over the ring by pressing firmly on the toilet.

Sometimes, the problem isn’t with the toilet but with an uneven floor. If your floor is very uneven, it can cause problems with the wax seal. To fix this problem, you will need to put shims under the toilet base to stabilize the toilet. Then, you can caulk around the toilet to hold it in place. If done properly, this should prevent further problems.

If you have a tankless toilet, water can leak from the handle or supply pipe. If you have such a leak, water will only leak from the toilet when the toilet is flushed. The best way to fix this problem is to replace the washers.
Of course, if you have problems at any point or feel that you don’t have the skills necessary to fix the water problems, you may want to contact a professional plumber.

The most common types of locks used to
keep houses safe are locks inside door knobs and deadbolts. Other than purposes of security, locks are also installed in places that need privacy like bedrooms and bathrooms. To provide ultimate security, these locks need to function properly. That being said, here are some tips on how to properly install door locks, whether it’s for the first time or whether you’re replacing old ones.

Door knob installation.
If you are replacing an old door knob, the first thing obviously would be to remove it; you will need to unscrew the screws supporting the door knob. They are found on the door’s interior side. If the cover plates of your door knob have screws, remove them to loosen it. If they don’t have any, locate a tiny slot that has a piece of metal on the handle’s side. Use a clip or the new doorknob’s key to push in on the piece of metal. The doorknob should pop loose.

Okay, now that the old knob is loose, the next thing to do would be to get rid of the underlying plate. Remove the doorknob to see the underlying plate and look for a slot along its seam. As you do this, get where it (the plate) knocks against the door. Insert a screwdriver with a flathead and twist it halfway for the plate to pop off.
Next, remove the latch and old screws. Once the plate is out, you’ll see screws that you’ll remove with a power drill or screwdriver. Simply use it to take out the old screws and you’re done, the last step is installing the door handle and new latch. When doing the last step, adjusting the distance between the doorknob’s center and the door’s edge is something you may have to do, it all depends on your door. To finish up, orient the striker in its right position and screw in the latch. Put in the new doorknob by screwing it in, making sure you don’t over tighten the screws or you’ll bind it.

Deadbolt installation
Using the manufacturer’s reference, make a hole through the door for the deadbolt using a large power drill. Next, drill a hole through the door’s edge and fit the bolt into the hole, mortising the area around the faceplate using a chisel. Properly secure the bolt into the door using screws. Fit in the exterior side to the door then proceed to the interior piece. Align the mounting holes in the lock with the screw holes and screw in the deadbolt. Use paint to mark the bolt’s end, close the door and turn the deadbolt a few times to mark the door’s frame. A 7/8” spade can be used to drill two holes that are overlapping in the door’s frame for the deadbolt. Mortise the hole’s surrounding area and then secure the striker plate using screws.

Using these few tips should help improve your home’s privacy and security for you and the ones you love.

While carpenters might typically be a welcome sight around the home for renovations, carpenter ants are not. Notoriously destructive, these ants chew through wood with razor-sharp mandibles and create a vast array of tunnels, leaving sawdust piles behind in their wake. Carpenter ants weaken the structural integrity of the home and are difficult to find and treat. By better understanding their way of life, controlling them is often an easier task.

Carpenter ants live in a caste system made up of queens, worker ants and winged males. The queen is the largest aunt in a colony, measuring up to a full inch. They breed in the spring and set up multiple nests in any given season. A year later once the larvae have hatched, swarming ants can clearly be visible in the areas where they have nested which is an unpleasant sight but still a helpful tool in locating and treating their hidden nests.

Since carpenter ants, like most of its ant relatives survive by means of foraging for food and supplies, rather than squashing an ant upon site it is possible to follow the ant back to where it gained entrance to the home. Mainly nocturnal, following the trail of worker ants returning back to their nest inside the home is possible and the discovery is confirmed by knocking on the walls and paying special attention to any hollow sounds. If the ant colony is disturbed, they will often rustle within the walls, producing an audible sound that is easily detected by listening.

Any commercial grade ant treatments used inside the home should be applied with care, ensuring that the directions are carefully followed to avoid contamination of other materials or substances. Bate is available in environmentally friendly varieties and are a leading, healthy solution to treatment without resorting to harsh or dangerous chemicals. Carpenter ants enjoy sweet foods, so combining a chemical like borax and sugar-water can lure them out of their nests and then kill the colony effectively. Once poison is ingested by one or more of the worker ants, they in turn carry it back to share with the rest of the colony. When handling borax or other potentially dangerous chemicals, precautions should be observed by wearing gloves and thoroughly washing your hands after treatment.

Preventative measures to control or eliminate future infestations are always an easy solution to nipping a carpenter ant problem in the bud. Since carpenter ants prefer moist wood, repairing any leaking pipes and regularly scheduling pipe maintenance can prevent future infestations. Planting marigolds on the outdoor border of the home also works in deterring carpenter ant colonies. Use fertilizer in any flower beds instead of moist mulch, and make sure to maintain and regularly trim any overhanging tree branches in close proximity to the home. Carpenter ants don’t like the scent of peppermint, so casually using peppermint soap for cleaning, especially if a nest is suspected to be nearby, is an effective tool in removing the problem.

Easily one of the most difficult household pests to eliminate and notorious for their destructive behaviors, a carpenter ant infestation might require placing a call professional exterminator. If other household treatments fail to succeed in removing these tenacious pests, exterminators are well-trained and qualified to rid the home of unwanted guests and take steps to avoid a repeat visit.
